MERCHANT QUALITY BARS
A minimum of discard is taken from the ingot during the production of Merchant Quality Bars. The bars should be free from visible piping, but seams and other surface irregularities may be present. Chemical Composition is reported only on the ladle analysis. Merchant Quality Bars are easily welded, formed, and can be machined, but are not recommended for forging, heat-treating, cold drawing, or intricate machining. Merchant Quality Bars conform to ASTM A575.

SPECIAL QUALITY BARS
Special Quality Bars are produced under more stringent controls than Merchant Quality Bars. Enough of the ingot is discarded to avoid piping. Blooms and billets are inspected and prepared by grinding, scarfing, and chipping in order to minimize surface imperfections. Chemistry is subject to ladle and check analysis. Special Quality Bars are used when extensive machining and, (or), heat-treating is planned. Special Quality Bars conform to ASTM A576.

LOW CARBON BARS
M1020 is a low carbon steel with medium manganese that is produced to a specific chemical composition. M1020 bars are suitable for welding and forming applications.
ASTM A-36 is produced to mechanical properties offering a minimum yield of 36 KSI and a minimum tensile strength 58 KSI. A-36 Bars are designed to be used in structural applications.

HIGH STRENGTH LOW ALLOY BARS
ASTM A-588 is a high strength steel offering a minimum yield of 50KSI for bars up to 4" thick. These bars are copper bearing bars that offer approximately two to four times the corrosion resistance of carbon steel bars without copper. High Strength Low Alloy bars are used whenever a cost savings from a weight reduction can be gained or when there are concerns about atmospheric corrosion.
